About the adventure

This is Humblewood, a magical forest inhabited by talking birds, intelligent animals, ancient secrets, and thrilling adventures! The D&D campaign is designed for children and lets players create their own heroes before working together to explore a world in which each character has a role to play. You can look forward to exciting quests, unforgettable characters, creative problem-solving, and a lot of chances to influence the story. This game is designed specifically for young adventurers ages 9–10 or 11–12. No previous D&D experience is necessary! Whether your child has never played a tabletop roleplaying game before or is already an experienced adventurer, the game will be adapted to the group’s experience level and interests. My goal is to create a welcoming, collaborative environment where kids can be themselves, try out new ideas, and build confidence while having fun. Players can expect exciting but age-appropriate challenges, lots of imagination and roleplaying, teamwork, and plenty of laughs. Most importantly, there’s no “right” way to play—whether your child loves rolling dice, telling stories, solving puzzles, battling monsters, or making everyone laugh, there’s a place for them in Humblewood!

About me

Hi there, I'm Chuck and I serve as a Game Master and have always been a storyteller throughout my life, having gained more than ten years of experience in working with children in creative, educational, and recreational situations. I've worked with kids in a variety of age groups as a camp counselor, film instructor, tutor, and educator. One of the most satisfying aspects of my work has always been creating a friendly and encouraging atmosphere in which children can be creative, build their confidence, and enjoy themselves. I have been playing and acting as a game master for table-top role-playing games for approximately seven years, and I particularly enjoy the way D&D offers children the opportunity to work together, deal with problems, express themselves, and co-create stories. Since I have undergone training as an improviser at the Second City Conservatory Program, I have a solid foundation in communication, creativity, and thinking on the spot that I apply in each game. The aim I have as a game master is to ensure that every player feels that their views are being heard, that they are included, and that they are excited about taking part in the adventure. Since I was a child I have enjoyed making up and telling stories, instead of studying the Pythagorean theorem I used my math notebook to write fantasy stories (apologies to Mrs. Greenfield). My great interest has always been in storytelling, and I enjoy the fact that tabletop games allow young people to take an active role in the stories they create rather than just watching them happen. Above all else, D&D should be a setting in which children can have fun, make friends, try out new activities, and let their imaginations go wild. I'm looking forward to helping young adventurers roll the dice, tell some wonderful stories, and finding out just how much they can create together!

What to expect
Preparing for the session

The scheduling, links and communication will all take place via StartPlaying. Before the game you will be given a Zoom link for our sessions as well as access to the D&D Beyond campaign, where we will manage the character sheets. In order to take part, players must have a functioning microphone and camera. This arrangement enables everyone to stay in contact, communicate easily, and make themselves feel as though they are a part of the group. During Session 0 the characters will be created jointly. The players can either build their own character with the help of the DM or select one of the premade characters. You may begin thinking about what kind of animal, class, or subclass would be fun, but all decisions regarding the characters will be settled together at Session 0.

What Chuck brings to the table

As your GM, my goal is to create a game that feels welcoming, immersive, and exciting for young players. I’ll have everything prepared using D&D Beyond, including character sheets and resources to help make the game easy to follow. We’ll meet through StartPlaying and Zoom, making it simple for players and parents to join the adventure from home.

How Chuck creates a safe table

Creating a safe, respectful, and comfortable table is one of my top priorities. Before the campaign begins, I’ll provide a simple Lines & Veils document so players and guardians can communicate any boundaries they’d like me to know about. This will be sent before Session 0, and we’ll review our table expectations together. No one is ever required to explain a boundary—setting one is enough. During Session 0, we’ll talk about kindness, teamwork, respectful communication, and what to do if something at the table doesn’t feel right. We’ll also discuss how we handle in-game disagreements and sensitive topics so everyone knows what to expect. During the game, I use a simple X, N, & O safety system: X = Stop — Stop the scene immediately. N = Not quite — Something is heading in an uncomfortable direction. O = Okay — Everything is good to continue. Players can use these signals by typing in the Zoom chat, sending me a private message through StartPlaying, or saying it out loud. I will always respect these signals without requiring an explanation. At the end of each session, I’ll also do a quick check-in to see how everyone is feeling, what they enjoyed, and whether anything could have been handled differently. Guardians are welcome to reach out privately if they have questions or concerns. All communication between the Dungeon Master, young heroes, and their guardians will take place through StartPlaying channels. Respect is non-negotiable, and my goal is to create a collaborative environment where every young adventurer feels welcome, included, and excited to play.
